Malacca, also written as Melaka, is the oldest city in Malaysia. History practically lives on the streets of Malacca, where you find the oldest Chinese temple, oldest mosque, oldest fort, and more. Today, the historical and heritage sights are being restored, as Malacca endeavours to earn itself the Unesco World Heritage Site recognition. As an organisation devoted to the preservation of heritage sites in Asia, some of the developments in Malacca has run against the very effort to preserve it as a heritage city.

Malacca encompasses 1652 sq km and has a population of about 600,000. Malacca is located approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours from Kuala Lumpur, depending on traffic, and is reachable via the North South Expressway (E2), exiting at Exit 231 at Durian Tunggal. There are many cultural sights in Malacca, and if you wish to explore all of them, you'd probably need at least four days or more.
